Christenings

Shadows of a family lifting their child cast on a sunlit stone wall at a christening in Macedonia

Chapter I

THE CHILD

Smiling baby in a white lace christening bonnet and gown, holding a small silver cross

Every christening begins with one small soul at the centre of it all. Before the candles are lit and the water is blessed, there is a child — wide-eyed and weightless, entirely unaware that an entire day has been built around them. We linger here, in these first quiet moments, because they pass before anyone notices: the tiny hands, the borrowed gown, the hush of a family holding its breath. This is where the story starts — small, sacred, and impossibly new.

Chapter II

THE GATHERING

Introducing the people who make the day whole — the parents, the grandparents, and above all the godparents, who step forward to carry a promise as much as a child. A Greek Orthodox baptism is never a solitary affair; it is a gathering, a homecoming, a vow spoken aloud by everyone in the room. They come from across Kavala, Thassos, and the villages of Macedonia, drawn by something older than obligation. We move quietly among them, gathering the glances and the held hands that no one thinks to pose for.

Chapter III

THE BLESSING

Inside the church, the world softens to candlelight and incense. The water is blessed, the oil is poured, and a name is spoken into being for the very first time. This is the heart of every christening — the moment a child is lifted, dripping and astonished, into a faith and a family at once. We photograph the sacrament with the reverence it asks for: the priest’s steady hands, the parents’ held breath, the small cry that fills the nave and makes everyone smile. These are the frames you will return to for the rest of your life.

Chapter IV

THE CELEBRATION

Parents laughing with their toddler in white sunglasses among floating soap bubbles at a christening celebration

When the water dries and the candles are blown out, the celebration begins. The solemn hush of the church gives way to laughter spilling into the afternoon — music, long tables, and a child passed from arms to arms like the gift everyone came to see. This is the half of the day made of soap bubbles and sticky fingers, of cousins running barefoot and grandparents who cannot stop smiling. We stay close to all of it, because joy this pure has a way of disappearing the moment you look away.

Chapter V

THE BEGINNING

A wedding ends in happily ever after. A christening ends where everything starts. The water dries, the guests drift home, and a freshly named little person is carried out into the world for the very first time — already wrapped in more love than they could ever know. We close every christening story here, at the threshold, because the most beautiful part of the day is not the ceremony or the feast. It is everything still to come.
